Launch post for Schema Radar, a free page (no account) that puts TypeSafe's Jev in front of a database schema. ### What it does - Pick Mastodon (116 tables), Discourse (384), Cal.com (100), WordPress (18), or paste a schema (CREATE TABLE for PostgreSQL/MySQL/SQLite/SQL Server, Prisma models, Rails schema.rb, or "table: col, col" lines). Parsing happens in the browser; only table and column names are sent to Jev. Nothing is stored. - Type a question: one Jev Choice over all tables (each option = the table's column names) returns a probability per table, normalised across the schema. The page asks on every pause and at least every 900 ms while typing, so the ranking moves under the cursor. Measured on Mastodon: 0.2 to 0.8 s per answer, about 5 calls per typed sentence. - Write the SQL: the question plus the top tables' columns go to AI2SQL's generator; the query appears on the page in 2.5 to 3.7 s. - X-ray: one Choice per column (email, phone, name, address, ip, credential, financial, health, identifier, timestamp, content, other), one call per table, six in parallel. Mastodon's 1,016 columns in 7 to 8 s; 48 to 51 personal-data columns found (24 credentials, 13 to 15 names, 6 IPs, 5 to 6 emails). ### Design notes - A single Choice beats one yes/no per table: on a 56-table schema the required tables sat at median rank 3 with one Choice and 22.5 with independent Nouls, at a tenth of the tokens. - Do not threshold: winners come back near 0.3 because probability is split across the tables the question needs. Keep top-k. - Choice caps at 255 options; above that, a name match against the question shortlists tables first. - Limits: stable is not right. Jev picked "SQL Server" for a QUALIFY query in every run (wrong). The x-ray is a guess from names: consumed_timestep in Mastodon's users table was read as a timestamp; it is an OTP counter. --- ## Blog: What Is Jev? TypeSafe's System One Model, Explained URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/what-is-jev Published 2026-09-21. Introduction to Jev for people who have not used it. ### Definition Jev is the first "System One" model from TypeSafe AI, released 15 September 2026; the company was founded by Diogo Almeida, who worked on ChatGPT at OpenAI. Jev generates no text. A request has a `state` (any text) and one or more typed `questions`; the response is a typed decision with probabilities. Trained with a method TypeSafe calls RLCD (Reinforcement Learning for Calibrated Decisions), sampling in parallel rather than generating a token sequence. Endpoint: POST https://api.typesafe.ai/v1/systemone, model `jev-latest`. ### The three primitives - **Noul** — probability from 0 to 1 that a statement is true. No separate confidence field; the number is the confidence. Example response: {"type":"noul","noul":0.99} - **Choice** — one option from a list you define, plus a probability for every option and a confidence. Max 255 options. Cannot return an option you did not define. - **Score** — a float position on an ordered rubric of 2–10 levels you define, with a legend and per-level probabilities. A 1.43 at 0.35 confidence means the model is torn between levels 1 and 2. Rule: each question should ask exactly one thing. ### Jev vs a chat LLM Jev returns a typed value plus probabilities and needs no parsing layer, cannot write or explain, and cannot return an invalid answer. A chat model returns text/code/JSON, needs parsing, validation and retries, can write and explain, and can invent categories. They are complements: Jev decides, the LLM writes. ### Measured (September 2026, from Turkey) - Latency 296 ms median, 253 ms best, on a reused HTTPS connection; ~720 ms per call if a new connection is opened each time (434 ms of that is TCP+TLS setup). - 290 calls at 100 concurrent: 2.5 s, zero errors, no rate-limit responses. - Cost: 372,480 input tokens = $0.0156. Price $0.042/1M input, output free. - Calibration: at 0.8+ probability, correct 97% of the time (119/123) against an independent GitHub record; 60–80% → 91%. - No option-order bias: 12/12 identical answers across 4 option orderings, 0.015 median probability drift — same magnitude as drift between two identical calls. - Stability: 12/12 identical answers across 5 identical calls; ~0.02 probability wobble, so items near a threshold can flip. - "No hallucination" is true only about the shape of the answer: it identified a QUALIFY clause as SQL Server every time in every order, and QUALIFY does not exist in SQL Server. ### What has been built with Jev Real-time control: TypeSafe's Doom demo at 10 queries/second; Wikiracing (high-cardinality link choice). Reading text at scale: an open-source Chrome extension that makes Cmd-F match meaning; our audit of 290 GitHub "good first issue" threads (73% already taken, 15% genuinely free, 2.5 s, $0.0156); seven SEO/GEO workflows including scoring competitor pages and classifying a whole Search Console export by buyer intent. Matching and routing: matching 3,675 makers from an X thread in 40 seconds for $3.74; ticket triage, résumé screening, lead scoring. Checking other AI: gating AI-written drafts through 20 yes/no checks; approving an agent's command or query before it runs. Coding agents: the founder published notes on 21 Sep 2026 on model routing, tool calling and sub-agent collaboration with explicitly managed per-task context. Community benchmark suite: github.com/ersinkoc/JevBenchmarkLab (200 cases, 20 suites). ### When not to use it Generating any text; when you need the reasoning; arithmetic, counting and dates; anything a parser or a database column answers exactly; adversarial input (a documented weak spot); and cases with no path for "unsure" (about 1 item in 4 had an answer between 0.35 and 0.65). ### Access No waitlist since 21 September 2026 — key at console.typesafe.ai, also on OpenRouter in beta. `pip install typesafe-sdk`, env var TYPESAFE_API_KEY. Pydantic AI integration: `pip install "pydantic-ai-slim[typesafe]"`, Agent("typesafe:jev-latest", output_type=Model). Only bounded types (bool, enums, literals, floats 0–1); unbounded strings, integers and dates are refused. --- ## Blog: Jev for SQL: 5 Data Use Cases, and What We Measured vs. What TypeSafe Claims URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/jev-for-sql-use-cases Published 2026-09-21. First-hand test of Jev, TypeSafe AI's System One model. Jev does not generate text: it takes a `state` (any text) plus typed questions and returns a Noul (probability a statement is true), a Choice (one option from a list) or a Score (position on a rubric), each with probabilities. It cannot write SQL. ### What we measured (September 2026, from Turkey) - Latency: 296 ms median, 253 ms best, per call on a reused HTTPS connection. About 720 ms when each call opens a new connection (434 ms of that is TCP+TLS setup). TypeSafe claims 70–500 ms. - Throughput: 290 calls (~1,300 input tokens each, 7 questions per call) at 100 concurrent finished in 2.5–2.6 s in four runs and 5.2 s in one. Zero errors, no rate-limit responses. - Cost: 372,480 input tokens = $0.0156. Price is $0.042 per 1M input tokens, output free. A short one-question call uses about 300 input tokens, so 10,000 short rows cost about $0.13. - Confidence: where Jev gave 0.8+ probability that someone was working on a GitHub issue, 97% (119/123) had a linked pull request in GitHub's own timeline data. 0.6–0.8: 91%. Below 0.2: 65%, because those PRs were never mentioned in the text Jev saw. - Determinism: across 12 SQL-dialect classification tasks called 5 times each with identical input, the chosen option was identical in 12/12 cases; the winning probability moved ~0.02 median, 0.09 max between runs. - Option-order bias: running the same 12 Choice questions with six options in four orders (original, reversed, rotated, shuffled), the pick was identical in 12/12 and probabilities moved 0.015 median, 0.08 max — the same magnitude as repeat-call noise, so no detectable order bias. - "Zero hallucination" holds only in the narrow sense: Jev cannot answer outside the schema you define, but it can pick the wrong option. Example: it identified a QUALIFY clause as SQL Server every time in every option order; QUALIFY is Snowflake/BigQuery/Teradata/DuckDB syntax and does not exist in SQL Server. - Experiment result: of 290 GitHub "good first issues" listed as unassigned, 73% already had an open PR or someone working on them, 4% were already fixed, 8% only had a "can I take this?" comment, 15% were actually free. ### Five SQL and data use cases 1. **Semantic WHERE** — a `jev(text, statement)` SQL function (SQLite UDF shown). On a 12-row review table, `LIKE '%billing%'` matched 0 rows; `jev()` scored all 6 billing complaints 0.86–0.99 and everything else 0.04 or lower. A per-row UDF is slow (8.5 s for 12 rows); for real tables score rows in parallel, store the score, filter with plain SQL. 2. **Schema pruning for text-to-SQL** — measured on a 56-table schema, 3 questions × 2 runs, scored by the worst rank of a table the query actually needs. One Choice with 56 options: median worst rank 3, 1,633 tokens. 56 independent Nouls (one per table): median worst rank 22.5, worst 46, 17,404 tokens — it scored decoy tables like `sandbox_orders` at 0.86, above the real `orders` table, because a question asked in isolation cannot compare. Adding the full table list to each Noul's state fixes it (median worst rank 3) at 27,876 tokens. Lesson: a comparative question needs comparative context; a Choice supplies it by construction. Use top-k, not a threshold (winning tables sit near 0.30 because probability mass is split). Choice caps at 255 options. 3. **Safety gate for AI agents running SQL** — asks whether the SQL answers the user's question and whether it returns personal data. Off-topic queries pulling emails scored answers=0.01, personal_data=0.95–0.98. Keep hard facts (DROP, DELETE without WHERE) in a SQL parser, not the model. 4. **Verifying generated SQL** — regenerate when "answers the question" scores low. 5. **Classifying and routing queries** — intent, dialect, complexity. ### Three mistakes 1. Compound questions: "someone asked AND no work started" mislabeled 25 of 28 comment-free issues. Ask one thing per question; put the AND in code. 2. Asking the model facts you already have (PR open/merged/closed). Filter in code, ask only the fuzzy part. 3. Too little input: comments alone missed PR links stored in GitHub's timeline; adding them moved "already taken" from 57% to 73%. ### When not to use Jev Text or SQL generation, explanations, arithmetic/counting/date logic, anything a parser can determine exactly, and cases where an unsure middle band (about 1 in 4 items had an answer between 0.35 and 0.65) is unacceptable. No head-to-head accuracy comparison against an LLM was run. --- ## Blog: Should You Still Learn SQL in 2026 When AI Writes It? URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/should-you-learn-sql-in-2026 Published June 4, 2026 — anchored to the r/learnSQL thread "Learning SQL in the age of Claude, Codex and Gemini" (36 upvotes), the question every junior and career-switcher is asking. Thesis: yes, still learn SQL, but learn it differently — AI changes WHAT you learn first, not WHETHER. Shows a plausible-looking but wrong AI-generated query (a JOIN fan-out that double-counts) to make the case that you need to read SQL to catch what AI gets wrong. Reorders the learning priority: reading/verifying SQL over writing from scratch, JOIN cardinality and fan-out, NULL semantics, GROUP BY correctness, reading EXPLAIN. Covers using AI as a tutor not a crutch (write-it-first then ask AI to critique), what you can safely skip memorizing (per-dialect date syntax, LIMIT/TOP/FETCH variants), and a week-by-week 30-day learn-with-AI plan. (39 comments) and r/dataanalysis "Accounting → Financial Data Analytics" career-pivot thread. A side-by-side Excel-formula-to-SQL-equivalent reference table covering VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP→JOIN, SUMIF/SUMIFS→SUM+GROUP BY, COUNTIF→COUNT, AVERAGEIF→AVG, pivot tables→GROUP BY with conditional aggregation, nested IF→CASE WHEN, CONCATENATE→CONCAT/||, LEFT/RIGHT/MID→SUBSTRING, remove-duplicates→DISTINCT. Explains the rows-and-cells to set-based mental model shift, rebuilds a monthly sales pivot as SQL with conditional aggregation, and warns about the VLOOKUP trap (one-to-many JOIN fan-out inflating sums) with a wrong-vs-fixed example. Honest about still needing to sanity-check AI output. Premise: migrations rarely fail on data, they fail on the 200 little syntax differences. Includes a dialect-difference table across PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Snowflake, and BigQuery covering LIMIT/TOP/FETCH, string concatenation, current timestamp, date add/diff, IFNULL/COALESCE/ISNULL, auto-increment/identity, boolean types, quoted identifiers, STRING_AGG/GROUP_CONCAT/LISTAGG, and UPSERT (ON CONFLICT vs ON DUPLICATE KEY vs MERGE). Two full worked conversions (PostgreSQL→SQL Server and MySQL→Snowflake) with before/after code, plus the traps automated converters miss (implicit type coercion, NULL ordering, identifier case sensitivity, integer division). Explains AI2SQL's dialect-aware conversion with a verify-with-EXPLAIN caveat. Thesis: AI accelerates schema design but should not own it — you design, AI reviews and expands. Walks the ticket-conversation system end to end: start from the queries the system must answer, then a five-table schema (users, tickets, messages, attachments, tags + ticket_tags junction) with full DDL, PKs, FKs, indexes, sensible types, and deliberate denormalization (cached last_message_at). Covers normalization without dogma (1NF/2NF/3NF on the ticket example and when to denormalize), keys/types/indexes (surrogate vs natural, INT/BIGINT/UUID incl. UUIDv7, indexing FKs), exactly where AI helps vs where it shouldn't decide (domain model, denormalization, compliance, partitioning), and common schema mistakes (CSV-in-a-column, missing FKs, EAV abuse, money as float). I Just Discovered Functions in Views and I am in Heaven." (28 comments). The hook is the joy of discovering functions in views; the turn is the experienced-DBA reality check. Covers the three function types usable in a view (scalar UDF, inline TVF, multi-statement TVF) with CREATE VIEW examples, the scalar-UDF RBAR (row-by-agonizing-row) performance trap and how SQL Server 2019+ scalar UDF inlining (Froid) helps and where it doesn't kick in, why to prefer inline table-valued functions with a CROSS APPLY rewrite (before/after), the hidden cost of nesting views and functions (lost SARGability, seeks becoming scans), when functions-in-views are actually fine, and how to debug a slow function-backed view by reading the execution plan. (~15 hours old at write time). Walks through 5 production-grade patterns for replacing NULL values in SQL with concrete code: (1) plain UPDATE with WHERE IS NULL, (2) COALESCE in the SET clause for default substitution, (3) CASE-based conditional update for multi-column NULL handling, (4) UPDATE FROM with a JOIN to pull defaults from another table (Postgres/SQL Server syntax + MySQL variant), (5) batched UPDATE in chunks for tables with millions of rows. Includes a real PostgreSQL 16 benchmark on a 5M-row table showing batched runs in ~12 min vs unbatched lock for 40+ min. Six gotchas covered: NULL + arithmetic returns NULL, NOT IN with NULL, UNIQUE constraint behavior, trigger firing, audit table tracking, transaction log growth. AI shortcut section demonstrates AI2SQL turning plain English ("set all NULL phone numbers to 'unknown' but only for rows older than 30 days") into the right pattern. (23 hrs old) and r/SQL "Gemini 3.5 Flash scoring as good as flagship models in SQL querying" (2 days old). Sorts SQL work into two buckets. The 6 AI-friendly tasks: (1) boilerplate SELECT/JOIN from English, (2) dialect translation (Postgres ↔ MySQL ↔ SQL Server), (3) NULL/edge-case handling in WHERE, (4) window function syntax (LAG/LEAD/NTILE), (5) error message decoding, (6) query optimization suggestions. The 5 human-owned tasks: schema design, migration planning, deep performance tuning, production-touching queries without dry-run, security/RLS rules. Benchmark table comparing Gemini 3.5 Flash, Claude 4.7 Sonnet, GPT-5.4, AI2SQL, and bare-LLM control on accuracy, response time, dialect switching, and schema context. 30-second decision rule for whether to AI a task. Patient mid-junior dev tutorial built around one running employees + manager_id schema. Three production patterns: (1) hierarchical lookup (employee → manager) with two aliases and walkthrough of the "ambiguous column" error, (2) sequential/next-row comparison with discussion of when LAG window function replaces the self-join, (3) pair-finding (employees sharing a birthday) with the WHERE e1.id < e2.id guard to prevent duplicate pairs and Cartesian explosions. Four gotchas: forgetting the inequality WHERE, missing alias, Cartesian product on large tables, GROUP BY confusion. Decision rule for when to reach for window functions (LAG/LEAD), recursive CTEs (deep hierarchies), or stay with self-joins. AI shortcut section shows plain English ("Find every employee and their direct manager from the same table") mapped to a correct self-join. Core idea: SQL does not execute in reading order. Read FROM/JOIN first, then WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, window functions, SELECT, ORDER BY. ### The traps that change your numbers: 1. **An INNER JOIN inside a chain of LEFT JOINs** — cancels the outer join and silently drops every row without a match. Most common cause of a report that undercounts. 2. **A filter in WHERE instead of the JOIN condition** — on an outer join, removes rows rather than showing them as zero. 3. **GROUP BY on a name rather than an id** — merges two different entities that share a name. 4. **Non-unique join keys** — every SUM below the join is multiplied by the number of matches. 5. **NOT IN against a nullable column** — returns nothing at all if the list contains one NULL. Verification method: count rows on the driving table before and after each join. If the count rises, the grain changed and every aggregate below it is suspect. Tool: paste the query at the top of the page for an automatic walkthrough using your own table and column names. Key fact: parsers report the position where parsing failed, which is usually one token AFTER the real mistake. Look at the line before the one named. ### Error codes and what they mean: - **ORA-00979** (Oracle) — a selected column is missing from GROUP BY - **ORA-00942** (Oracle) — table exists but is not visible to your user, or needs a schema prefix - **ORA-00933** (Oracle) — a clause borrowed from another dialect, usually LIMIT - **1064** (MySQL) — generic syntax error; check the token before the quoted position - **42601** (PostgreSQL) — syntax error, often a trailing comma or reserved word - **42703** (PostgreSQL) — column does not exist, usually a case-sensitivity or quoting problem - **156** (SQL Server) — incorrect syntax near a keyword, often a missing alias or comma ### Dialect mismatches that look like bugs: LIMIT (MySQL/PostgreSQL) vs FETCH FIRST n ROWS ONLY (Oracle) vs TOP n (SQL Server); NOW() vs SYSDATE vs GETDATE(); || vs CONCAT() vs +; double quotes are identifiers in PostgreSQL and Oracle but strings in MySQL. Tool: paste the query AND the full error message. The code identifies both dialect and failure class, turning diagnosis into a rule rather than a guess. --- ## Blog: How to Optimize a Slow SQL Query with AI URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/optimize-slow-sql-queries-with-ai Diagnosing and fixing a query that has become slow. Method: get the execution plan first (EXPLAIN ANALYZE on PostgreSQL/MySQL, SET STATISTICS IO ON on SQL Server, DBMS_XPLAN on Oracle). Two signals: a full scan on a large table, and a large gap between estimated and actual row counts — the gap means stale statistics, which no rewrite fixes. ### Rewrites that reliably help: - `WHERE YEAR(d) = 2026` → range condition on d (makes the index usable) - Correlated subquery in SELECT → join to a grouped subquery (one pass instead of one per row) - `SELECT *` → named columns (less IO, covering index becomes possible) - `DISTINCT` over a duplicating join → fix the join grain instead - `OR` across columns → `UNION ALL` of two seeks - `NOT IN` with a nullable column → `NOT EXISTS` ### Rewrites that can change results — verify row counts: moving a filter into a JOIN condition, flattening a correlated subquery onto a non-unique key, removing DISTINCT. Composite index rule: equality-filtered column first, range-filtered column last. Tool: paste a slow query for a rewrite plus a list of what changed and why. --- ## Blog: How to Understand and Debug Legacy Oracle SQL URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/understand-and-debug-legacy-oracle-sql Working on old Oracle reports — the ERP persona: a 400-line query feeding month-end close, written years ago by someone who left. ### The five bugs that are usually present: 1. **ROWNUM before ORDER BY** — `WHERE ROWNUM <= 10 ORDER BY total DESC` returns ten arbitrary rows sorted, not the top ten. Correct form wraps the ordered query in an inline view. 2. **An inner join among outer joins** — drops exactly the records the report exists to highlight. 3. **NVL(amount, 0)** — correct when missing means zero, a bug when missing means a join failed. 4. **Implicit date conversion** — `> '01-JAN-26'` depends on session NLS_DATE_FORMAT and breaks in scheduled jobs. Use TO_DATE with an explicit format or DATE literals. 5. **A join key that stopped being unique** — every SUM below it multiplies. Safe workflow: explain before touching, baseline on a closed period, change one thing, compare row counts before totals, keep the old query in a comment. ERP-specific rules: never join a transaction table without the organisation/ledger key, never trust a status code without finding its lookup table. --- ## Blog: How to Debug Stored Procedures with AI URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/debug-stored-procedures-with-ai Procedures fail differently than queries: they have parameters, branches, transactions and error handling, so failure is usually data-dependent. ### Diagnostic order: 1. Isolate the failing statement — a procedure is rarely slow as a whole. Use STATISTICS IO and the actual plan (SQL Server), DBMS_OUTPUT/DBMS_PROFILER (Oracle), a debug table (MySQL). 2. Log parameter values at entry — half of cannot-reproduce cases are an unexpected parameter, often NULL. 3. **Parameter sniffing** — fast for one customer, slow for another with the same code path, and always fast when run ad hoc. The cached plan was built for different values. Fix with OPTION (RECOMPILE) on the sensitive statement or by copying the parameter into a local variable. 4. **Transaction traps** — a TRY/CATCH that logs without rolling back reports success while half the work was undone. In SQL Server an inner COMMIT does not commit; it decrements a counter. 5. **NULL parameters** — `WHERE customer_id = @customer_id` matches nothing when the parameter is NULL. Intent is usually `(@customer_id IS NULL OR customer_id = @customer_id)`. Before shipping: find every caller and its parameters, save a baseline for a closed period, change one statement, compare row counts then values. --- ## Blog: Best AI Tools for Oracle SQL and PL/SQL (2026) URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/best-ai-tools-for-oracle-sql-2026 Which AI tools handle Oracle as its own dialect rather than as MySQL with a different label. Covers Oracle Select AI (Autonomous Database, DBMS_CLOUD_AI profiles), Oracle SQL Developer for VS Code with the SQLcl MCP server for GitHub Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and AI2SQL (Oracle dialect; connecting an Oracle database is Pro/Team; 7-day trial, credit card required). ### Two-minute test for any tool: 1. "Top 10 customers by revenue" — a LIMIT in the answer is disqualifying; Oracle wants FETCH FIRST n ROWS ONLY or ROWNUM. 2. "Upsert these rows" — Oracle's answer is MERGE, not ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE. 3. Paste a real ORA error with its query — a tool that explains the code and changes one thing understands the dialect. ### Oracle specifics that break generic tools: no LIMIT; empty string IS NULL; dates need DATE literals or TO_DATE with explicit format (implicit conversion depends on NLS settings); schema prefixes matter (ORA-00942 for the reporting user); PL/SQL is a separate language. ### Tools: **AI2SQL** — dialect-first, schema-aware, covers explain/fix/optimize, local Connector for instances not reachable from the internet. **GitHub Copilot** — strong in-IDE with your codebase, weak on unseen tables. **Oracle SQL Developer assistant** — closest to the engine, tied to the tool. **General chat assistants** — fine for syntax reminders, drift toward MySQL on longer scripts. --- ## Blog: Best AI Tools for SQL Server in 2026 URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/best-ai-tools-for-sql-server-2026 Which AI tools actually produce T-SQL. ### T-SQL divergences that generic tools get wrong: TOP n not LIMIT (OFFSET ... FETCH NEXT for paging); GETDATE()/DATEADD/DATEDIFF not NOW()/INTERVAL; MERGE for upserts; string concatenation with + where NULL + 'text' is NULL unless CONCAT is used; square brackets for identifiers; ISNULL takes two arguments while COALESCE is portable. ### Two-minute test: "Top 10 orders by total" (LIMIT disqualifies), "insert if missing, update if present" (want MERGE), "rows from the last 7 days" (want DATEADD(day, -7, GETDATE())). ### Tools: **AI2SQL** — dialect locked per session, schema-aware, explain/fix/optimize, Connector for private instances. **GitHub Copilot** — best when procedures live in a repository it can see. **Copilot in SSMS / Azure Data Studio** — closest to the engine, tied to Microsoft tooling. **General chat assistants** — unreliable for production T-SQL. --- ## Blog: Best AI SQL Query Optimizers in 2026 URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/best-ai-sql-query-optimizers-2026 The distinction that matters: an AI optimizer rewrites the query text; a database tuning advisor reads plans, statistics and workload. They fix different halves. ### What a text-level optimizer reliably fixes: non-SARGable filters, correlated subqueries, SELECT *, DISTINCT covering a duplicating join, OR across columns, NOT IN with nullable columns. ### What it cannot know: which indexes exist and which the optimizer will choose; data distribution; whether statistics are current; concurrent workload. ### Database-native advisors for index decisions: SQL Server Database Engine Tuning Advisor, Oracle SQL Tuning Advisor, PostgreSQL auto_explain with pg_stat_statements. Safe procedure: capture plan and runtime, run both versions on the same data, compare row counts then totals, watch the three result-changing rewrites, re-run the plan — if the plan did not change, neither will the runtime. --- ## Blog: How to Connect AI to a Local SQL Server Database URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/connect-ai-to-local-sql-server-database Why a cloud AI tool cannot connect to localhost, and what to do instead. Root cause: localhost means the machine making the request. A cloud service dialing localhost reaches its own server. The same applies to 127.0.0.1 and private ranges (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x) which are not routable from the internet. Credentials are irrelevant — there is no network path. ### Three options: 1. **Port forwarding** — works, and a SQL Server port open to the internet is scanned within hours. 2. **SSH tunnel or VPN** — moves the boundary rather than removing it; real setup burden. 3. **A local connector making an outbound connection** — no inbound port, no firewall change. This is how the AI2SQL Connector works. ### Setup: download the single binary from ai2sql.io/connector, run it (it opens 127.0.0.1:5533), sign in with your existing AI2SQL account, enter database details (stored locally), load the schema. ### SQL Server specifics: named instances need the instance name or port; TCP/IP is disabled by default in many Express installs; use a SQL login if the connector runs as a different user; prefer a read-only login. What leaves the machine: schema (table and column names) and your question. Query results are read locally and stay there. --- ## Blog: ChatGPT for SQL vs AI2SQL URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/chatgpt-for-sql-vs-ai2sql An honest comparison rather than a pitch. ### Where ChatGPT is genuinely enough: learning SQL, one-off queries you can verify by eye, explaining concepts, converting small queries between dialects. ### The three places it stops being enough: 1. **No schema** — produces a clean query against invented names; your database has RA_CUSTOMER_TRX_ALL, not customers. Pasting DDL each session works but competes with your question for context. 2. **Dialect drift** — asks for Oracle, produces Oracle for the first few lines, then a LIMIT or GETDATE() appears on longer output. 3. **No plan or data** — "why is this slow" has no useful answer without an execution plan, index list and row counts. ### Decision rule: do you paste your schema more than once a week? If no, keep what you have. If yes, that repetition is the cost a dedicated tool removes. Also decisive: a database on localhost or a private network, which a browser chat window has no route to at all. --- ## Blog: Best AI SQL Tools in 2026: 7 SQL AI Tools Compared (October Update) URL: https://builder.ai2sql.io/blog/best-ai-sql-tools-2026 Updated: 2026-10-06 (plans, pricing and features re-checked; accuracy scores from the March 2026 test run) Hands-on comparison of 7 AI SQL tools tested against 50 queries across three difficulty levels on a real PostgreSQL database. ### Quick answer: The best AI SQL tool depends on where you work with SQL.
